My team and I are all about to be working full-time on GenJuice. I couldn’t be excited and I think that that is what will differentiate this from being a little side project to being a national movement.

One of the things I had to do recently was tally up my failures. It was a fun experience; it was similar to the kind of fun you experience when scratching blackboards. It’s funny but in doing this, I realized I’ve never took the time to look back and understand what made me fail.

I’ve always had the uncanny ability to pick myself up and keep going. In fact, I assumed a person gained strength from moving on and moving through obstacles. It takes a strong soul to focus on resolution and not wallow on negative events. It took training and discipline to be this person, and this frame of thinking is incredibly helpful when dealing with startups that have 80% problems and 20% success.

But seeking resolution without first reflecting on the problem is like fishing without bait. You continue to throw your line into the water and pray it will be different this time. You have to figure out why the fish weren’t biting in the first place. Maybe it was the wrong bait. Maybe there really aren’t any fish there to begin with. The point is you can’t continue to throw yourself out there without first understanding what went wrong your first, second and fortieth time.

(Remind me never to use a fishing analogy again. Not a big fan, but it served its purpose. I hope!)

Earlier this year, I brought a small group of driven young people together from different backgrounds, different industries and with different goals. We started off just talking about our personal brands, but it’s slowly changing into a way for us to support each other getting to where we’d like to go. This group is now called GenJuice. GenJuice meetups are ongoing get-togethers of young driven people helping each other reach specific professional goals.
